Fussy eaters: tips if your dog won't take it
Some dogs are particular about anything new — but there are a few easy tricks to get even the fussiest eaters taking their NutriPaw supplements.
Introduce it gradually
For hesitant dogs, start small: offer a part-serving alongside their normal food for the first few days and build up to the full serving as they get used to the new taste and texture. Giving it with a meal — or alongside a favourite dog-safe food — usually helps it feel like part of dinner rather than something new.
Start here: crumble and mix into food
- Crumble the treats over your dog's regular meal and mix them in — most fussy dogs happily eat them this way.
- For powders and food toppers, mix well through wet food, or add a splash of water to dry food so the powder sticks rather than sitting at the bottom of the bowl.
If that doesn't work: hide it in something tasty
- Try wrapping the treat in a small piece of deli meat, or a little peanut butter or soft cheese — many dogs take it happily when it's tucked inside a favourite.
Check storage and freshness
Keep the tub sealed tightly and store it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. If a tub has been open a long time or smells different from a fresh one, that can put dogs off — get in touch if you think your tub isn't right.
Prefer a different format?
Several of our products come in more than one format or version, so if your dog won't take one, there's often an easier option:
- All-Itch & Immunity Treats → All-Itch Food Topper
- Pre, Pro & Postbiotic Treats → Pre, Pro & Postbiotic Powder
- Calming Treats → Calming Food Topper
- Dental Formula Water Additive → Dental Powder (or vice versa)
- Hip & Joint Treats ↔ Hip & Joint Treats Plus — the two joint products have different recipes and textures, so a dog that refuses one will often happily take the other
Always follow the feeding guidance for the specific product you're using — servings differ between formats (see our dosage guides).
If they refuse it consistently
If your dog still won't take their supplement after trying these tips over a week or two, get in touch — we can look at swapping you to an option that suits them better, and talk through what else might help.
